A model’s portfolio is their most important tool for finding work. In your portfolio you should have a selection of professional images showing your versatility as a model. If you do not already have a portfolio, your agency will ask you to put one together. When you have signed a contract with them, they may arrange for you to go on a test shoot to fill your portfolio. A test-shoot can be a great opportunity for a model starting out but you should be aware of all the details. You should also read your model release form thoroughly, because you don’t know where the pictures from your photo shoot may end up.
The cost of a photo shoot can vary from no charge to a thousand pounds or even more! A test shoot, where the model is expected to pay for the cost of prints or other materials / expenses, will be in the region of £200.
Helpful Hint: We do not advise paying for a photographic shoot that has been arranged by an agency until you have actually signed with them. You should have a mutual agreement in writing before you give them your money.
Tips for Composing a Portfolio
· Check out the quality of the photographer’s work. Be aware of what you are paying for and what you are getting for your money. If you are not happy, why not shop around?
· Preparation is important. Get lots of rest before hand. Arrive early to avoid stress.
· Your hair and make-up should be good. For around £70, you can employ the services of a professional hair and make-up artist to help you.
· Take a selection of your best clothing that would be suitable for different shots.
· Try and get shots in different styles, such as close-up headshots, fashion or glamour (the two don’t really mix) and more commercial looks.
