A model is someone who poses for the purposes of fashion, art or the advertisement of products.
The belief that to be a model you have to be tall with certain measurements is somewhat of a misconception. Sure this is usually the case in fashion modelling but if a model’s stats don’t fit in to that particular box, there are many other fields a model can find work in. There are numerous types of modelling but for efficiency The UK Hot List has sub-divided our main categories in to Fashion Modelling, Glamour Modelling and Commercial Modelling. If you require further information on these genres of modelling, see our types of modelling pages. You can also consult your Agent, or you could ask on one of our forums.
A model has no set working hours. He or she will find that work is intermittent and days-on can be long and tiring. The work is physical with long periods spent on the feet and being active.
Auditions, photo sessions and other work will often take a model away from home. Jobs can involve travel to nearly any location in the country or the world.
Getting Started
You don’t need formal qualifications to work as a model but you do need an excellent appearance, be well presented, professional and have a good positive attitude. The basics for your appearance should be clear skin, a healthy complexion, good teeth, hair and nails.
Skills Required
If you are thinking of becoming a professional model, these are some of the things that will be required of you.
· Models should have a passion for their art.
· You will need to have the right look for a particular job.
· You need to possess and maintain a good complexion and figure.
· It helps tremendously to have an interest in fashion, trends in clothing, hair and make up.
· Embarking on a career in modelling means that you are opening yourself up to many knocks and harsh personal scrutiny. With this in mind, confidence and self-security are a must.
· You should always be professional with a great personality.
· Even with an agent, a model is still their own boss. So it is important that the model stays self-motivated and always on the look out for new opportunities to progress their career, get their face out there and sell themselves.
· Shoots and shows are run on a tight schedule. A model turning up late can mean the employer loses money, and it is unlikely that model will be invited back. So, you should be punctual and willing to work long hard hours, sometimes in stressful environments.
Income
This really is a case of how long is a piece of string. A model’s earnings depend entirely on the types of jobs they are offered, their level of experience or desirability. Rates for a job will generally range between £50 and £1000. A plumb job with a fashion house can net anywhere from £10,000 to £40,000, or even more!
